Global Issues Group

The Global Issues Group (GIG) is made up of a small group of Calvary members who promote mission and social action in the church.  We arrange all-age service events throughout the year to enable the fellowship to engage in mission more knowledgeably.

In February at the outset of FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT we lead a Sunday morning service challenging the congregation to think about how they can make a difference to the world’s poorest farmers by making a decision to buy Fairtrade products on a regular basis.

During CHRISTIAN AID WEEK in May we hold an all-age service celebrating the work of Christian Aid and encourage everyone to donate to that charity either on-line or through Christian Aid donation envelopes distributed to the congregation.

As part of our church’s HARVEST EVENTS the GIG group organise a Harvest celebration at an all-age morning service which usually features the work of BMS around the world.    The service and after service Harvest lunch helps us raise much needed funds to be passed on to BMS for their world-wide mission.

We also encourage members and friends to bring donations of packaged foodstuffs to the service which are then sent to the Cardiff Food Bank. Calvary also collects food donations throughout the year to pass on to our local food bank.

In October GIG promotes the annual Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoebox Appeal within the church and amongst other church groups such as Totsplus and Craft Club. Over the past few years Calvary has acted as a reception centre for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.
In 2024 nearly 200 boxes were collected and sent on their way by Samaritan’s Purse to delight children around the world with their enduring message of God’s amazing love.

At Christmas time we also hold an all-age service featuring the work of other Christian charities such as Tearfund or Barnabas Aid to raise awareness of their work and their need for funds.

Throughout the year the GIG group continues to keep in touch with the church’s BMS PRAYER PARTNERS making sure that the mission partners prayer letters are made available to our church members on a regular basis and on occasion even inviting our partners to attend one of our Sunday services when they are on UK leave to share first hand what God is doing through them in the countries in which they serve.

Our planning meetings take place approximately every quarter on-line, so if you would like to join in with us please do get in touch with Colin Crooks, Sarah Evans, Paul Guns or Kate Lowry.
