Global Issues Group
The Global Issues Group (GIG) is made up of a small group of Calvary members who promote mission and social action in the church. We arrange events throughout the year to enable the fellowship to engage in mission more knowledgably. In 2016 several events we arranged.
On 28th February at the outset of FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT we organised and staged a Fairtrade breakfast. We also led the morning service that day challenging the congregation to accept the Fairtrade Challenge of seeing how many different Fairtrade products they could buy and/or consume during the course of the Fortnight. The Fairtrade breakfast event raised £60 which was passed on to the charity and all who attended enjoyed competing in the Fairtrade quiz.
During CHRISTIAN AID WEEK in May we provided collecting boxes for the congregation to save their small change and a total of £305 was raised for Christian Aid over the following weeks. We organised a Christian Aid breakfast on the morning of 22nd May to mark the end of Christian Aid week which all who attended enjoyed. The Churches Together evening service at Canton Uniting that same day provided us with an opportunity to hear Mari McNeil speak about the work of Christian Aid.
Throughout the year the GIG group has continued to keep in touch with the church’s BMS PRAYER PARTNERS.
As part of our church’s HARVEST EVENTS the GIG group organised a Harvest celebration at an all-age morning service on 18th September using BMS material on Syria’s forgotten families. After the service a ‘frugal’ Harvest lunch of baked beans, cheese and baked potato was served. The service and lunch raised a total of £380 for BMS. The lunch took the place of our more usual Harvest supper and was a better time of day for young families, so we will probably be doing something similar again this coming year.
Domestic Violence Sunday was marked at our morning service on 20th November. A request by GIG for church members to bring in handbags containing toiletries had a great response and these have been distributed to local Women’s Refuges.
GIG promoted the annual Christmas Shoebox Appeal within the church and amongst associated groups during October. As a result 104 boxes, a large number of which were donated by the Totsplus toddler group, were donated to Operation Christmas Child. This year the boxes were sent out to Zambia, Albania, Romania and Belarus.
Over 2016 and 2017 GIG will be promoting the collection of small change in support of Cardiff’s Christmas – The Story, thus ensuring that this important annual event continues to entertain and inspire the next generations of school children in the capital for years to come.
Also in 2017 we hope to raise more funds for Tearfund through adopting their ‘mean bean challenge’...so watch this space.
Our meetings take place approximately every quarter on a Sunday afternoon at 4.30pm in the Foyer at Calvary, so if you would like to join in with us please do get in touch with Colin Crooks, Sarah Evans, Kate Lowry or Tricia Wiltshire.
